A Comparison of Collaborative Problem Solving Using Face-to-Face versus Desktop Video Conferencing

چکیده
A small field experimental study was undertaken to ascertain the applicability of desktop video conferencing (DVC) for a University Extension Office. Subjects (county extension agents and a faculty expert in dairy nutrition) engaged in a “ration balancing” task for herds of dairy cows, using DVC and face-to-face collaborative meetings. Subjects preferred DVC over face-toface collaboration, presumably because DVC allowed them more freedom to manipulate computer-generated solutions.

Why Do Users Like Video? Studies of Multimedia-Supported Collaboration
Three studies of collaborative activity were conducted as part of research in developing multimedia technology to support collaboration. One study surveyed users’ opinions of their use of video conference rooms. Users indicated that the availability of the video conference rooms was too limited, audio quality needed improvement, and a shared drawing space was needed. A second study analyzed vid...
متن کاملThe Impact of Collaborative Style on the Perception of 2D and 3D Videoconferencing Interfaces
Video-based collaborative virtual environments (CVE) attempt to emulate face-to-face meetings by immersing remote collaborators in a shared 3D virtual setting. To investigate potential advantages of this novel type of collaborative user interfaces for creating a better sense of social presence and affording a more efficient collaborative process we conducted an empirical study in which pairs of...
متن کاملAnalyzing Collaborative Learning Interactions in Shared Workspaces
In recent years, shared workspace systems have been an active area of research and development in computer-supported collaborative learning. A particular type of shared workspace systems provides graph-oriented visual representations for synchronous interaction, which are well suited for coconstructive activities. This type of systems is used in face-to-face settings as well as in distant setti...
متن کامل- VIDEO CONFERENCING - Prepared By : Ayse KOK
This paper outlines the functionality and application of video conferencing in relation to relevant learning theories. It also explores the strengths and weaknesses that might be created by this technology. The outcomes of a trial undertaken at the University of Oxford during a group project also provides the basis for predicting the usefulness of the technology for learner-centred interactions...
متن کاملMaking Media Spaces Useful: Video Support and Telepresence
Media spaces support remotely based cooperative activities and in some cases promote telepresence. Often, however, video use surrounding these systems has not been completely adequate or even appropriate for the tasks typically investigated. Research has primarily focused on “talking heads” video—video images of participants conversing face to face. Presently, the findings suggest that use of v...
